Construction and Control Joints

Control joints in concrete are placed at regular intervals along a weak plane to ensure that cracks form only at the joints and not elsewhere. Concrete pavements, slabs, walls, floors, dams, canal linings, bridges, and retaining walls all include control joints.

When concrete is laid, it shrinks due to shrinkage, creep, and thermal movement, resulting in microscopic cracks in the vulnerable zone.
